AAPI Victory Fund Says Governor Newsom Win Steels AAPI Prosperity Nationwide after California Gubernatorial Recall Election Victory

WASHINGTON — Today, AAPI Victory Fund released a statement congratulating Governor Gavin Newsom on his victory in the California gubernatorial recall election. This high-stakes election had the power to influence not only AAPI and progressive ideals in California but across the country.

AAPI Victory Fund Chairman and Founder Shekar Narasimhan issued the following statement:

“Governor Newsom’s victory is a win for not only AAPIs in California but for national efforts to address climate justice, anti-AAPI hate, and to uplift AAPI values across the country. California is the world’s fifth-largest economy, and Governor Newsom has consistently urged our federal government to address the effects of climate change and has set a national example for implementing aggressive climate policies.”

“In addition to his immaculate record on issues of climate justice, Newsom has also been a dedicated ally of the AAPI community. As anti-AAPI hate crimes spiked throughout COVID-19, Newsom repeatedly spoke out against the hateful rhetoric and subsequent violence perpetrated against the AAPI community.  To those ends, Newsom has proven time and time again that he’s more than just talk. He’s been integral in the efforts to uplift and elect AAPI leaders like Rob Bonta who made history as California’s first Filipino American to serve as the state’s attorney general. This past month, AAPI voters turned out for Newsom—not just because California is majority democratic but because Newsomhas continued to show up for the AAPI community even when fellow elected officials dismiss the fact that anti-AAPI sentiments are directly related to the rhetoric our leaders use.”

“For every AAPI community member, our vote is our voice, and AAPI voters have once again shaped an election that will impact national policy.”
