Virginia Immigrant Community Takes a Stand Against Gubernatorial Candidate Ed Gillespie
New Ad Highlights Gillespie Implicit Endorsement of White Supremacists and Racist Symbols
WASHINGTON—The AAPI Victory Fund in partnership with the Latino Victory Project released its hard-hitting commercial “American Nightmare,” in response to gubernatorial candidate Ed Gillespie attacks on the Virginia’s immigrant populations. The powerful ad portrays the stress and worry haunting immigrant families in an increasingly hostile political and social environment. Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders represent nearly eight percent of the state’s population.“Ed Gillespie has repeatedly scapegoated the immigrant community for gang violence and crime during his campaign,” said Shekar Narasimhan, Chairman of the AAPI Victory Fund. “American Muslims and South Asian Americans have been the target of murder, hate crimes, and harassment in Virginia, solely because they do not fit into Gillespie’s and Donald Trump’s ‘American Dream.’ We take a stand against Gillespie and all those who promote a message of xenophobia, hate, and intolerance. Now is the time for all Virginians to cast a vote for a more inclusive and diverse Virginia economy and against bigotry and Gillespie and his ticket.”Since launching in 2015, the AAPI Victory Fund, the first super PAC of its kind, has focused on Virginia voters and Virginia AAPI and immigrant communities. After Donald Trump attacked Khizr and Ghazla Khan in 2016, whose son is a fallen American soldier, AAPI Victory Fund released a digital ad “Rejecting Hate,” which attacked fear-mongering comments against the American Muslim community.
