AAPI Victory Fund Mourns the Passing of Honorary Chair, Former Secretary Norman Y. Mineta

WASHINGTON – Today, the AAPI Victory Fund mourns the passing of Secretary Norman Y. Mineta, Honorary Chair of the organization’s National Leadership Council.

Secretary Mineta, the first Asian American Cabinet Secretary, spent his life advocating for AAPI representation in government. In January 2016, Secretary Mineta helped launch the Victory Fund to mobilize and empower AAPI voters. In 2018, AAPI Victory Fund launched the “Mineta XI,” candidates in high priority congressional districts to fight back against the bigoted and anti-immigrant policies of President Donald Trump.

Governor Gary Locke, Member of the AAPI Victory Fund National Leadership Council issued the following statement:

“Secretary Mineta, or lovingly known in our community as simply ‘Norm,’ was an icon to all of us. We owe much of our growth in political power and representation in government to his trailblazing and barrier-breaking work. We stand on his shoulders.  Seared by his experiences living in the Japanese internment camps during WWII, he was forever committed to protecting the constitutional rights of all Americans, regardless of ethnicity or heritage.  He was a true inspiration to all Americans and especially our community.

“As we celebrate Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we also celebrate the life and achievements of our dear Norm.”

Shekar Narasimhan, Chair and Founder of AAPI Victory Fund issued the following statement:

“Secretary Mineta has always understood that representation in government, and mobilization of our community is necessary to win in elections, especially those that are being decided by the narrowest of margins. Whether it was on campaigns for himself, or mentoring the next generation, his impact on our community is immeasurable. Our thoughts are with his family and friends and we hope to continue to carry his legacy onward.”

The AAPI Victory Fund will pay tribute to Secretary Mineta at its May 20, 2022 AAPI Victory Rally and Next Generation Reception.
